Tuffy’s Pet Foods, Inc., of Perham, Minnesota, is voluntarily recalling specific lots of four-pound bags of Nutrisca Chicken and Chickpea Recipe Dry Dog Food.
Yes, that’s the same Nutrisca sold under the Dogswell brand. Tuffy’s, Dogswell’s “co-packer,” according to the company’s press release, manufactures the product for Dogswell.
According to Dogswell, a single four-pound bag of Nutrisca Chicken and Chickpea Dog Food obtained during routine testing by the Ohio Department of Agriculture tested positive for salmonella. No people or pets have become ill from the products to date, according to the company, and none of the company’s other products are affected by the recall.
The company did not say how many bags are being recalled, but the affected products received a nationwide distribution to brokers, retail stores, Internet retailers, and distributors.

In its press release, Dogswell identified how salmonella made it into its product: “During normal manufacturing production, a blockage occurred on the line. While removing the blockage, the line became exposed to salmonella.”
The company also tried to reassure customers that its testing was adequate.
“We have a rigorous testing process in-place to ensure that all of our products are safe. Our products are tested on-site at the source of supply and then again using a certified independent third-party lab to ensure that they are safe and compliant with regulatory guidelines.”
According to the company, “pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
