Do you live in a dog state? Or a cat state? Perhaps where you live leans more toward “bipetisan” when it comes to animal companions, loving both dogs and cats equally. Find out which way each of the 50 states swings — and cast your vote — through the United for Adopted Pets campaign, presented by PetSmart Charities.
The campaign to save homeless pets includes a Facebook poll in which you can state a “pawreference” for a particular species. Voting stays open through Oct. 25, but the nonprofit organization released early results this week:
Dog lovers have cast 32 percent of the overall vote so far and claim the majority in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Vermont.
Those who prefer feline friends have weighed in with 21.7 percent of the overall vote and control Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
The largest block of voters proves “bipetisan,” with 46.3 percent of the vote and a majority in Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.
The Facebook poll ends by asking voters to forget “pawlitics” and pledge adoption of a homeless pet instead of purchase for their next animal companion, and 86.2 percent have done exactly that, standing united for the important cause.
PetSmart Charities serves as the largest funder of animal welfare efforts in North America, supporting more than 2,000 local organizations in the United States and Canada. It helps find adoptive homes for nearly 400,000 dogs and cats every year. The organization ranks in the top 1 percent of charities rated by Charity Navigator, and it has received its highest, 4-star rating for nine consecutive years.
