I absolutely adore this video: “Keeping Your Dog Happy and Healthy on a Hike.” Why? Because not only is it jam-packed with good advice, but it also stars a spunky Boston Terrier and his scruffy sidekick. The pair race through the woods, their paws barely meeting the trail. They splash around in a swimming hole, happy to get wet and cool off. These dogs are having the Best. Day. Ever.

The tips I find most useful to my situation are:
Pick the right hike — My own Boston Terrier Spot will soon celebrate his 11th birthday, so I appreciate the recommendation that older dogs stick to flat terrains and to hikes under two miles.
Stay safe out there — I didn’t know you could search online to find out where large populations of ticks lived. You can! And this video shows you how. It also suggests ways to protect against the nasty little critters before, during, and after a hike.

I am now ready to plan a safe and fun hike with my pup, who has been sitting by my side as I watch this video over and over again, patiently waiting to hit the trails and have his own Best. Day. Ever. I just won’t tell Spot he’ll have to have a bath when he gets home, too, just like the dog in the video.
