Thanks to the Internet, two dogs who seemed certain to be euthanized are instead on their way to a loving forever home.

This Monday, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia, posted a picture of Kala and Keira, two dogs who had only hours to go before they were to be euthanized. Underneath the picture was text written from the POV of Kala:

I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.” Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix. She’s so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don’t know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over. Unless…

The picture of the two dogs embracing went viral immediately; within two hours and six minutes from the original posting, a veterinarian (who has not been publicly named) showed up to pay for the two dogs’ medical expenses and take them home.

In some places, it’s been reported that Kala and Keira were adopted, but the Facebook page is definite on this point: Kala and Keira are still waiting for their forever home. Anyone who’s in the area and interested in adopting them can go to the Angels Among Us adoption page.

But as we say so often in the cases of these touching media events: If you do go to that page, please remember that Kala and Keira are not the only dogs looking for a new home. Since the charming, heartwarming picture that saved their lives went up on Monday, Angels Among Us has posted pictures of about a dozen other pets who need to be adopted. The same goes for every other rescue organization that has any kind of Facebook or web presence. Kala and Keira’s story is deeply moving, but it could very easily have had an ending that wasn’t nearly as happy for anyone.
