And Now, We Review a Sampling of Summer Dog Collars

My Boston Terrier, Ace, had a blast testing a variety of collars sent our way by Wayfair.com.

Summer is in full swing, and for many Americans this means long, hot days playing or lying around in the sunshine. While you or I may feel fashionable in a sundress or pair of shorts, how do canines flaunt their (owners’) style when they’re already panting under all that fur? By switching up their collars!

Although Ace is a small dog — a Boston Terrier — there are fewer things she despises more than wearing clothing, so when she’s not modeling for this column she’s usually naked –- except for her collar. She is well known amongst her family and friends for sporting a different collar every week, which I change after her Sunday afternoon bath so she can start the week off fabulously. I get to keep Ace safe and adorable, and she gets to avoid being dressed up like a furry doll.

So when the folks at Wayfair.com offered to send some samples from its dog collection, I wanted to see if they could satisfy the discerning eye of this collar connoisseur. Wayfair.com is known as a one-stop Internet shop for stylish, modern products for your home, like furniture and décor. They also have a HUGE collection of products for pets that capture a similar modern aesthetic.

Like a kid in a candy store, I wanted to try a little taste of everything! I found Wayfair.com’s dog products to be well-organized, and the website is cleanly designed and easy to navigate. I appreciate that they’ve curated a selection of attractive products at a variety of price levels -– while not every item was within my budget, it was easy to find several that were affordable and still totally cute.

Here are five collars I chose from Wayfair.com that reminded me of summer: colorful, stylish, and fun.

1. George SF, Doggy Dots Cotton Dog Collar ($28.95 to $32.95)

This collar is more stylish than any of my own clothing! I love everything about it: the vivid colors, the simple design, and that it is made in the U.S.A. by a San Francisco-based company. It features metal hardware and a plastic buckle.

2. Planet Dog, Cozy Hemp Adjustable Collar ($18.95 to $19.95)

“Cozy” is not often associated with “durable,” but this collar by Planet Dog combines both in your choice of earth tones. I would not recommend this collar for small dogs because the fleece lining doubles back when the collar is adjusted, making it rather bulky. Instead, try the Small Hemp Dog Collar, a similar collar minus the fleece.

3. Ruffwear, Top Rope Dog Collar, Metolius Blue ($29.95)

This collar has lots of practical features for active dogs, including a strong seatbelt-like buckle, a silicone tag silencer, and a separate metal ring to which to attach a leash. I own other Ruffwear products, and this collar is similarly durable and attractively designed. I think owners of outdoorsy medium and large dogs could really take advantage of all this collar has to offer.

4. Yellow Dog Design, Green Daisy Standard Collar ($11.99 to $13.01)

Pretty pink-and-white daisies brighten a grass green background on this polyester collar. Yellow Dog Design’s collars are made in the U.S.A. come in a variety of designs. This is a great basic collar that looks like it would hold up wash after wash.

5. Zack and Zoey, Flutter Bugs Bumble Bee Dog Collar ($26.57 to $31.98)

How precious is this design? I like that the plastic hardware matches the orange flowers. The bright, contrasting colors pop against Ace’s brown fur. This collar is out of stock right now, but never fear: I found it on other major pet retail sites and at less than one third of the price.

Dogster Scorecard for Wayfair.com:

  • Quality: All collars reviewed were solidly constructed and met my high Ace standards.
  • Style: Wayfair.com’s selection of dog products is modern and fashionable.
  • Function: Although the Wayfair.com website features a seemingly endless collection of products, it was easy to navigate.
  • Creativity: There’s something for everyone here, and in a variety of price ranges.
  • Value: Four of the five collars were competitively priced, and Wayfair.com offers free shipping on orders over $49.

Bottom line

Wayfair.com’s huge selection of dog products will help your dog –- and by extension, you –- stay modern and stylish within your budget.
