I Didn’t Know a Silly Web Comic About a Disabled Dog Could Make Me Cry

When I clicked on this comic about a dog with three legs, I didn't expect to be so deeply moved.

Oh what? No, I wasn’t crying. It’s just my allergies — they make my eyes tear up as I’m cutting onions in the sink after getting a little dust under my eyelid.

Okay, yes, I’m crying. I’m sitting at my desk weeping like a child.

Admittedly, when I started reading this comic, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I thought it might just be some oversensationalized emotional terrorism — the kind that screams at you to feel a certain way without coming to the emotion organically. I thought it might be a comic shaming people who adopt dogs as gifts or some sort of trite commentary on how kids these days spend too much time playing video games.

But then I read it and, well, you’ll see …

The comic is originally from a Brazilian artist named Fábio Coala and it was first published in January 2012, but it made its appearance on a U.S. site in October. I came across the comic via a post from Batman, a dog with a wheelchair.

One time I told my therapist, “I think I am broken.” He told me, “Wounded, perhaps, but not broken — which means there’s always a chance to heal.”
