Westminster is one of the few two-day shows in America. Tuesday was for Sporting, Working, and Terrier groups, as well as Best in Show.
The Sporting Group
The Sporting Group has some of dogdom’s most active and beloved breeds. One of the most impressive dogs in terms of versatility at this show was the English Cocker Spaniel Copper Ch Chestnuts Selling The Drama CD GN RAE NA NAJ NJP. Those letters after his name stand for obedience, rally, and agility titles, plus he has a title from Therapy Dogs International. All the more amazing because he had to fit earning them in between winning many Best in Shows! And he’s 12 years old!
At the other age extreme, the German Shorthaired Pointer was the youngest dog in the ring, at 12 months. He finished his championship that day by beating all the champions for Best of Breed. Neither scored in the group ring, but just getting there was score enough!
Riley (GCH Whistlestop’s Riley On Fire) the Irish Water Spaniel has been on fire, with 41 Best in Show wins to her record, and nothing could dampen her flame. She may look like a Poodle but she’s a true Sporting dog, and the judge agreed, placing her first. She was closely challenged by a surprise entrant, the Black Cocker Spaniel Beckham (GCh Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction).
The Working Group
The Working Group packed the most poundage into the arena. Making its first appearance at Westminster was a Chinook, the state dog of New Hampshire.
The Great Dane representative was the first mantle-patterned Great Dane to win the breed at Westminster. The pattern (with white feet and collar) was once a breed disqualification but has always been necessary in the gene pool to maintain other accepted patterns. The Anatolian took time off from guarding livestock in the Florida countryside to visit New York City. We were very impressed with the Leonberger, who was a service dog, physical therapy dog and active in obedience and agility.
First went to our pick, the Portuguese Water Dog. Matisse (GCH Claircreek Impression De Matisse) is currently the top dog in the country and won the AKC National Dog Show in December. He also won the group at Westminster last year.
Second went to the heaviest dog in the ring, the Mastiff GCH Willow Ridges Risky Business; third to the Akita GCH CR-Wicca’s Trade Secret; and fourth to the Boxer GCH Brisbane N Blue Monday’s Diamonds Are Decadent.
The Terrier Group
More Westminster Best in Show winners come from the Terrier group than any other — 45 in all! The top Best in Show breed at Westminster is the Wire Fox Terrier, with 13 wins. The Rat Terrier made its Westminster debut with the largest entry (20) of any terrier.
First went to the Wire Fox Terrier Sky (GCH Afterall Painting The Sky). Sky was 2013’s top dog of all breeds, defeating more dogs than any other. She has a total of 128 Best in Shows, including the AKC National. Second went to the Skye Terrier, GCH Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie; third to the just-back-from-maternity-leave Border Terrier; and fourth to the first Russell Terrier to place at Westminster, GCH Goldsand’s Columbus.
And the Best in Show winner is …
There are bigger shows than Westminster. But none more prestigious. Accepting the purple and gold Best in Show ribbon is the stuff dog show buffs don’t even dare dream of. But once a year, that impossible dream comes true.
Of the seven finalists, one will be awarded Reserve Best in Show. And one, Best in Show.
