I’ve been worried about my beloved Border Collie Sheba — in recent days, she’s beendrinking and urinating a lot more frequently and copiously than she ever used to.
Naturally, I’m terrified that something might be wrong with her kidneys, so first thing this morning we visited the vet: Dr. Michael Rubinstein, one of theexcellent staff veterinarians atthe clinic ofthe Humane Society of New York.
Besides being a brilliant diagnostician, he also happens to be an accomplishedmagician in his spare time, expert at complex card tricksand the like.So not surprisingly, the good doc enjoysusing sleight-of-hand tomake bothersome procedures such as blood and urine draws go quickly and painlessly, so his patients don’t experience more discomfort than absolutely necessary.
True to form, Doc R treated Shebawithmagical efficiency — she never even noticed the needles he stuck in her throat and abdomen!
The doc also happens to be quite the jokester — soI was touched when,to defusesome of the tension I’m obviously experiencing untilwe getSheba’s lab results,he ended our visit on a jocular note. Proudly holding aloft the prized sample of yellow liquid he’d extracted, he cracked:
“Urine good hands with Dr. Rubinstein!”
We — dog patient and Dogster — couldn’t agree more.
